WHAT BURNS MORE FAT, RUNNING OR PEDALING?

If you want to lose weight and do not know which activity to choose, here are some considerations based on a study from the University of Birmingham (England).

If you are sedentary and you want to lose weight without resorting to the so-called miracle diets, it is best to choose to exercise and improve your physical and mental health.

However, the first question is whether to buy a sneaker or a bicycle. It all starts with personal taste. In the current crisis scenario, the financial factor may be one of the important factors in making its decision. It is not difficult to buy cheap material nowadays, and you can use the large sports surfaces to buy low-priced sneakers or bikes .

But which of the two activities burns the most fat?

At the same intensity level, the race burns a little more fat than the bike.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham analyzed 12 men who exercised on a stationary bike and on a treadmill, analyzing the fat burned on each device. The intensity of the exercise was gradually increased.

The intensity was measured through the consumption of oxygen. If you exercise intensely at around 60% of your Max VO2 (measure of the body's ability to use oxygen) the exercise will certainly last longer, as this is a moderate intensity (when you can talk).

At this intensity the body uses fat as the energy source for exercise. If the intensity is greater, the body then consumes preferentially sugars and proteins as energy.

The authors of this study think that racing uses more muscle fibers than the bike, which is why they burn more fat. On the other hand, despite using less fibers, cycling may be more demanding with muscle fibers than running. So when you pedal, the body consumes more glucose and also releases more lactic acid.

It seems to us that the study will not be as rigorous and conclusive as this, so the important thing is to replace the sofa with shoes or bike according to your personal taste.
